Saving Energy in IP Telecom's Data Centers

IP Telecom operates 5 data centers at three different sites in Portugal. Clients include highly regulated private sector entities as well as governmental institutions who have data residency requirements. 

IP Telecom has significant energy costs of more than 100k €/month to operate the data centers. To optimize the energy efficiency, Two Impulse made a deep study of all data centers where a significant amount of energy related data was collected. This includes usage patterns for cooling, ventilation, humidification, dehumidification and many more.

As a tangible result out of these activities we achieved:

•  Direct observations and suggestions that when applied to the data center systems resulted in energy and cost savings of 17%.

•  A set of rules and complex heuristics to validate continuously the system optimization (Best parameters lead to a 12% effiency improvement).

• Model based on Machine Learning that recommends the best setpoints to apply in the data center. (additional 2.5% to 8.5% efficiency improvement).
